We have a great opportunity to join our Education team as a Reading Specialist Tutor for Novus, our prison education provider at HMP Buckley Hall offered on a part-time, fixed-term basis initially until 31st March 2025. (0.6 FTE - 22.2 hours per week).

What the role entails
As a Reading Specialist Tutor, you will be responsible for assessing and supporting emergent readers through regular phonics-based lessons and other reading initiatives. You will also proactively drive the prison's wider reading strategy through activities such as reading groups, delivering training sessions and working in partnership with the library, education and workshops to enable all prisoners to maximise opportunities to benefit from reading and improve their skills where appropriate.

What we need from you

  • Teaching Qualification - PGCE or Cert Ed
  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area
  • At least a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy
  • Track record of effective reading teaching, including the use of phonics
  • Knowledge of the benefits of reading and a passion for helping others to experience them
  • Experience of supporting emergent readers, learners with LDD needs and a willingness to work with those with ESOL requirements
  • Able to undertake occasional travel across sites

The role is particularly suited to someone who is equally comfortable working independently and in partnership with others. Excellent communication skills to reach a range of audiences are essential as are the ability and desire to develop your own ideas to promote reading to all.
