Group Learning Support is our largest provision across the group, with a wider team of 300+ staff members all playing a critical part to our students that require educational support throughout their learning journey.

Job title: SEN Student Support Assistant

Salary: up to £12.40ph

Contract type: FTC (August 2024 - July 2025) Term time only, Part time hours available (28 hours pw Tuesday to Friday and 21 hours pw Wednesday to Friday).

Location: Woodlands Centre at Merrist Wood college

Our centres are open from 8.30am - 4pm and 9am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday and therefore we expect our staff to be available to commit to these working hours over a minimum of 3 days per week.

We are looking for Special needs student support assistants to join our dedicated team at The Woodlands Centre.

The Woodlands Centre is a purpose-built SEND centre with sensory and therapy rooms, classrooms, and gardens. The centre is a fun and rewarding place to work- and no two days are ever the same!

The role involves working closely with young adults aged 16 to 25 years old, primarily those with complex learning difficulties and/or care needs in a supportive and nurturing environment. The curriculum focuses on developing communication, Independence and engagement.

Class sizes range between 5-10 students and you would work alongside the class tutor and fellow LSA's to provide highly person-centred care on a 1:1 basis or within a small group to enable students to develop their confidence and independence skills both academically and socially.

This role offers the chance to make a meaningful difference in a young person's educational journey.

The Role: SEN Student Support Assistants:

As a special needs Student Support Assistants, you will support the students with their learning and general wellbeing to ensure every student has the best opportunity to reach their full potential in a caring and safe environment.

This may include:

  • Motivating and encouraging the student
  • Liaising with class tutor and a wider disciplinary team
  • Monitoring and recording students’ progress and providing feedback to both tutors and parents
  • Consistently and effectively implementing agreed behaviour management strategies.
  • Where necessary supporting with personal care.

What do you need to be a successful SEN Student Support Assistant at Activate Learning?

  • Professional or personal experience of learning disabilities, or experience within the health and social care sector (not essential but would be advantageous)
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • A genuine desire to help students with diverse learning needs reach their full potential
  • Patience and Empathy - An SEN student support assistant should be empathetic and understanding to the challenges students may face.
  • Problem-solving Skills - Encountering challenges is commonplace in special education. An effective SEN Student Support Assistant should be able to think on their feet, coming up with solutions that suit
  • Adaptability- the ability to adapt to cater to individual student requirements as and when required.
