Governance Director

Halesowen College has a well-deserved reputation for high standards, a broad, impactful curriculum and a caring, supportive sense of community. Graded as Good by Ofsted in September 2023, the College is ranked within the top 10% of colleges for examination.

The College has an aspiration to be exceptional and is committed to driving even further forwards in its quest for excellence. It has a number of exciting projects in the pipeline, including launching its new flagship digital and media technology centre at Trinity Point in September, developing a Centre of Excellence for Health and Social Care, and delivering an ambitious estate redevelopment. It enjoys well-embedded partnerships with local stakeholders and has recently taken over a commercial training company to further enhance its skills offer.

Due to the retirement of the current post holder, we are seeking a new Governance Director who will provide leadership, advice and support in relation to governance activities, statutory matters and regulatory compliance in line with best sector practice. Working closely with the Chair and the Board of governors, you will play a key role in ensuring they fulfil their remit and contribute meaningfully to the strategic direction of the College, promoting sound standards of governance and providing relevant training and guidance. Our Board of governors, which this role will support, is impactful and ambitious for the future, providing effective challenge and support for the College to succeed. This role provides ample opportunity for a forward-thinking individual to bring fresh ideas and to develop new ways of working.

Our successful candidate will bring robust experience of working in a corporate governance role, with a thorough understanding of corporate governance, including the operation of a Board of governors. We are flexible regarding sector background, as long as you are confident in interpreting legislation and policy, and able to provide authoritative advice. Strong communication and organisation skills are of key importance, as is the ability to prioritise and to work on your own initiative.

There is flexibility with hours; the role could be appointed on a 0.6 or 0.8 FTE basis, but prospective working patterns can be discussed with candidates.
